One of the main keys to ensuring that your vehicle lasts as long as possible while running efficiently is maintenance. Perhaps the most fundamental component of vehicle maintenance is taking care of oil changes at correct time and/or distance intervals. Oil is the lubricant that keeps your major engine components operating properly and smoothly. At Straightline Dodge, we want to make Oil Changes easy to understand so that you can keep your focus on your busy life and feel at ease when it comes to your vehicle purring just like it should. Today we will look at why and when you should be changing your oil.
Why Change Your Oil?
Oil’s basic purpose is to lubricate various internal parts of your engine in order to smooth out any sort of metal on metal contact. These areas are incredibly tight spaces that undergo extreme pressures and temperatures, so lubricant viscosity and cleanliness play a major part in determining how effective it is at allowing the engine to operate smoothly. Over time, conditions inside the engine will cause oil to break down and lose its useful properties, this happens weather you use organic or synthetic oils. In addition, various contaminants will begin to make their way in and build up. Your vehicle has a filter that works to keep your reservoir as particle free as possible, these are changed out every time you do a change to keep them working well.
Neglecting to change out worn out oil or clogged filters over will slowly cause internal damage in your engine compartments to start taking place, so be sure to change your oil and filters out as needed for your vehicle to maintain perfect engine and lubricant health.
When Is The Right Time For a Change?
You should always refer to your vehicles manual for its proper oil change interval, and if you are driving a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram or FIAT from 2008 or newer you can expect your oil change indicator alert system to let you know when your oil is ready for a change. If you don’t have access to your manual or an automatic alert system, changing your oil every 5000 km is a long-standing rule of thumb that should keep your engine happy.
