Feel Fresh? Summertime treats!! Edmonton’s Best Fruit.
There are not many activities that can a family, kids or even an adult date back to nature and down to the dirt as picking freshly grown fruit with your own hands. The season is upon us and fruit picking is short-lived in this 2 season province we call Alberta as winter can come at any time! While we do live in the prairies full of Cattle Farms and Wheat / Barley fields Alberta has an abundance of freshly grown and ripe for harvesting fresh produce. Edmonton has some of the best U-Pick sites that Alberta has to offer. The Team at Straightline asked their team and families what is best and plan on going to each of the following locations this summer to test them out for ourselves.
Sprout Farms Apple Orchard is a 7-acre orchard set in the picturesque countryside about 20 minutes north of Edmonton near the town of Bon Accord. Their belief strongly supports sustainability in all aspects of their farm and they have incorporated these values into their production practices using no pesticides or chemicals. Similar to Fort Saskatchewan’s local celebrities Sprout Farms has a team of 30 Sheep to maintain their weed and grass maintenance lead by Junior the Llama who is the boss of Sprout Farms, this is always a great site for children to see and watch. Unfortunately, Sprout no longer offers U-pick of their orchard fresh apples but you can drive on up to their farm gate and get yourself as many fresh picked bags or basket of the delicious apples that you want.
Big Rock Berry Farm is a local fruit farm owned and operated since 2012 by the Darragh family, Tim, Amber, and their four young sons, talk about a busy life on this farm. This farm was started with the goal to provide this growing family with locally grown produce and has turned into a flourishing farm providing local fresh fruit for everyone who takes the short drive to Spruce Grove. Big Rock is a great low key family-friendly experience that operates on an appointment based system during the weekdays and first come first serve during the weekends. Take the short drive to Spruce Grove and pick some of Alberta’s best tasting fresh cherries, strawberries, rhubarb, raspberries, Haskups, and Saskatoon Berries.
Husband and Wife operated the Prairie Berry Farm located just East of Edmonton that grows their fruit organically and in the good old fashioned way. They have planted over 6000 trees since opening the farm in 2006 and have just recently planted a small orchard of Carmine Jewel Cherries. On top of the delicious fresh Cherries, you can go and pick Raspberries, Haskaps, Black Currants, and Saskatoons. This family ran farm encourages you to make a day out of your adventure bring a picnic lunch and spend some time in their rural setting with acres and acres of natural forest all while getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
My Personal Favorite Stevens Strawberries has been around this province for years and many have heard about them if you haven’t you are missing out and need to go experience this place. Opening in 1991 they are known for their amazingly sweet strawberries. Stevens Strawberries are harvested on farmland that has been in the same family since 1920 and the business is now on its second generation focused on 100% chemical frees plump strawberries that mean NO insecticides, NO Fungicides, NO Herbicides. With both You-Pick and Pre-Picked options this farm only produces Strawberries for the taking and is located between Edmonton and Red Deer in the Wetaskiwin region. $3.50/lb of U-pick or $27/LB Pre-picked this place and their strawberries are well worth the drive!
